Editorial Policy
Not just headlines. Insights. The First Click exists because the modern news reader is drowning in headlines and starving for context. This policy explains how we choose, produce, and stand behind our content — and what you can hold us to.
1. Our mission
We curate the news that matters, connect it to what came before, and explain why it matters — so that your first click gives you understanding, not just information. We are a publication built for the age of AI: we use modern tools openly (see our AI Use Declaration), and we hold ourselves to standards of accuracy, independence, and transparency that predate them.
2. How our content is made
Curation, with attribution. Much of our work involves monitoring, selecting, and synthesising reporting from across the news ecosystem. We always credit and link to original sources. We aim to send readers to good journalism, not to substitute for it.
Human editorial control. Every piece we publish is approved by a human editor. Our systems help our editors discover, organise, and rank the day's news, but selection, framing, judgment, and publication decisions rest with people — always.
Insights and analysis. Where we add analysis — trends, patterns, implications — we distinguish clearly between what is reported fact (attributed to sources), what is data (with its provenance), and what is our interpretation.
Labelling. News curation, analysis, and opinion are labelled as such. Sponsored content, if any, is governed by our Advertising Policy and is never produced by the editorial team.
3. Accuracy and verification
We verify before we publish: claims are checked against original sources, numbers are traced to their origin, and single-source claims are treated with caution and identified as such. When a story is developing and facts are uncertain, we say so plainly rather than projecting false confidence.
4. Corrections
We correct errors quickly, visibly, and without defensiveness:
- Factual errors are corrected in the piece, with a dated correction note explaining what changed. We do not silently rewrite.
- Significant errors that changed the meaning of a piece are additionally flagged in the next relevant newsletter.
- Minor fixes (typos, formatting) that don't affect meaning may be made without a note.
Spotted an error? Email editor@the-first-click.com. We review every corrections email and respond to substantive reports.
5. Independence
Our editorial judgments are not for sale — to advertisers, to sources, to our parent company's clients, or to anyone else.
- Advertisers have no influence over coverage. The full rules are in our Advertising Policy.
- Agency of Strategy Inc., our parent, does not direct coverage. If we ever cover a matter in which Agency of Strategy or its clients have a material interest, we disclose that interest in the piece.
- Sources do not get copy approval, and we do not trade favourable coverage for access.
- Staff conflicts — financial interests or personal relationships that could reasonably affect judgment — must be disclosed internally, and the person involved is recused from the coverage in question.
6. Sources and fairness
We attribute information to named sources wherever possible. We use unnamed sources only when the information matters and cannot otherwise be obtained, and we describe them as precisely as we can. Subjects of critical coverage are given a fair opportunity to respond. We do not plagiarise, and we do not pass off others' reporting as our own — curation means credit.
7. Rankings, scores, and recommendations
Where we rank stories, score relevance, or recommend reading, those systems are designed by our editorial team to serve readers — never to serve advertisers, engagement for its own sake, or outrage. The signals they use are set by editorial policy, reviewed by humans, and never sold or adjusted for commercial consideration.
8. Reader trust
We do not publish clickbait headlines that the story cannot honour. Our headline's promise and the piece's content will match — that is, in a sense, the entire premise of The First Click.
9. Accountability
This policy is a public commitment. If you believe we have fallen short of it, write to editor@the-first-click.com with "Editorial standards" in the subject line. Complaints about editorial standards are reviewed by the editor responsible for the publication, and we will tell you what we found.
